Download Free Software Tools. Get freeware portable and installable applications

TightVNC server main window.

TightVNC is a crossplatform freeware remote control software package including server and viewer applications. It allows you to control a remote machine with your local mouse and keyboard, just like you would do it sitting in front of that computer.

Just install server application on the computer you desire to control from distance, set passwords for remote access and use viewer application from your local machine. It makes it easy to upload, or download files from TightVNC server, view the remote desktop in whole on a screen of smaller size, or zoom in the picture to see the remote screen in more details.
Using TightVNC you can cut your expenses and save your time on traveling, or help your friends and family to solve problems with their computers remotely, or make sure nothing wrong is happening on your computers when you are away.
TightVNC is compatible with standard VNC software, conforming to RFB protocol specifications. It is free for both personal and commercial usage, with full source code available, useful in administration, tech support, education and for many other purposes.
When server is installed on Windows 2000 and above, it can use DFMirage mirror driver to detect screen updates and grab pixel data in a very efficient way, saving processor cycles for other applications. Supports optional JPEG compression optimized for slow and medium speed connections and thus generates much less traffic as compared to traditional VNC encodings (unlike other encodings, Tight encoding is configurable via compression levels and JPEG image quality setting). Also an improved Java viewer is included with full support for Tight encoding, 24-bit color mode, and more (Java viewer applet can be accessed via built-in HTTP server like in standard VNC).

TightVNC supports two passwords. One for full control and another for read only. Due to protocol limitations, password length is limited to 8 characters max. Although TightVNC encrypts VNC passwords sent over the net, the rest of the traffic is sent as is, unencrypted. So using TightVNC over the Internet can be a security risk. Later version will have built-in encryption but, in the mean time, if you need real security, it is recommended to install OpenSSH, and use SSH tunneling for all TightVNC connections from untrusted networks. Unix version of TightVNC Viewer can tunnel connections via SSH automatically using local SSH/OpenSSH client installation.
